Fixing a Failed Field with Nayadic

In a study conducted at Purdue University, three options for reducing the organic loading on a failed or failing field were offered:

  1. Construct an additional soil absorption field
  2. Rest the absorption field for an extended period
  3. Install a secondary treatment unit

The Problem: Dissolved compounds and suspended particulate matter in septic tank effluent promote the growth of anaerobic (without oxygen) organisms. In time, the anaerobic bacterial community forms a biomat, a black, jelly-like substance that can reduce soil permeability by 99%. Effluent surfaces or backs up into one’s house as it can no longer seep into soil.

The Solution: Install a Nayadic advanced secondary treatment plant between the septic tank and the field. It is often a more efficient way to restore a failed septic field than replacing a field with a new one or moving out of your home for 6 months to a year.

The Mechanisms: Conceptually when a plant grows it takes in water, minerals and carbon dioxide. To break the plant material down again to water, minerals, and carbon dioxide the oxygen given off must be returned. Nayadic does that using an air compressor. Wastewater is broken down in the treatment plant thus denying the anaerobes food. Also with the very high rate of oxygen transfer inherent with Nayadic, the discharge is a highly oxygenated. Oxygen allows aerobic organisms, which are inherently much more efficient than anaerobes, to grow feeding on the biomat, thus restoring soil permeability.Note: there are a couple of other simple steps that must be taken with the Nayadic addition. Your Nayadic installer has been trained to know what to do.

Case Study

Failed Three Times: The field in the picture below has failed three times, with all three times being restored by a Nayadic.

  1. The first time the field failed was before the Nayadic was installed. After Nayadic installation the field was rejuvenated and surfacing stopped.
  2. With all new Nayadic systems installed, a two year warranty covering the Nayadic and the directly related components is included. After the warranty was over, the property owner stopped having professional maintenance. The system continued to work, but in year five, the air compressor failed. A broken air compressor resulted in oxygen not entering the treatment plant, so wastes did not get broken down in the treatment plant, which caused excessive organic loading to the field, so biomat surfaced again. The property owners called us, and we repaired the air compressor. The field was restored for the second time.
  3. Again, the property owner decided not to have the treatment system professionally maintained. The electrical circuit breaker for the air compressor was tripped.  The air compressor was without power so no longer functioned. Again, after a couple of years or so, surfacing reoccurred. The owner contacted us. The problem was quickly determined, and for the third time a Nayadic restored a failed field.

How it works:

  1. A Nayadic supplies a large quantity of oxygen, which breaks down the dissolved compounds and suspended materials thus denies food to the anaerobic biomat.
  2. The treated effluent, now crystal clear, contains oxygen so allows aerobic (with oxygen) bacterial community to flourish. As aerobes have a significantly more efficient way of functioning, they soon outcompete the anaerobes, thus removing the biomat and restoring soil permeability.
Case Study Conclusions:
  1. Maintenance is vital, and as a result we do offer on-going service contracts.
  2. Property owner in above case has again refused to have their system maintained, so there will be sooner or later, a fourth time a Nayadic fixes the same field.
